The Qur'an
β Ancient texts Β· The Qur'an
Islam's scripture, six centuries after the New Testament. It takes up the same figures β Adam, Noah, Abraham, Lot, Joseph, Moses, David, Solomon, Jonah, Zechariah, Mary, Jesus β and retells their stories as warnings and signs, sometimes close to the biblical text, sometimes closer to Jewish and Christian legend (the Talmud, the Infancy Gospels), and on a few points deliberately parting ways: the Qur'an affirms Jesus's virgin birth and miracles and calls him Messiah, but denies that he was crucified (Sura 4:157) or is the Son of God.
Rodwell's 1861 translation is arranged in the roughly chronological order he reconstructed; here the 114 suras are restored to the standard canonical order. Verse divisions follow this edition.
This is a later scripture's engagement with the biblical material, not a source behind it β the direction of influence is the opposite of the older texts in this section.
